Billiard Room Designs that Inspire Fun Times

Pool tables have come a long way since the rich history of billiards began in the 15th century. Today, pool tables can be constructed using a wide range of materials, colors and styles, opening the door to endless possibilities for billiard room designs. With the help of a professional, a billiard room can be designed as not only a fun and entertaining gathering space, but also as a unique expansion of your home’s style and your own personal aesthetic.

One of my clients wanted a spacious billiard room complete with sitting areas and a media center so there would be something for everyone to enjoy. I have to admit, I had a lot of fun with this design project. Inspired by the backgammon board, I used a diamond motif to add eclectic interest and highlight the unique angles of the pool table and media center. The two handcrafted bar tables became the perfect finishing touch to add intriguing shapes and fun pops of color.

A modern pool table perfectly suits the contemporary look and feel of any space. Curving arches immediately catch the eye to create an intriguing focal point. I love the warm, glowing palette, as well as the textures of coffered ceilings, which can give pool rooms a rich, rustic elegance.

A traditional billiard room has a fabulous Old World feel. Dark greenery not only adds sculptural appeal, but also brings out the green accents in a gorgeous red and gold rug. Decorative carvings of a stately pool table and tray ceilings can be beautifully echoed by wall patterns and scrolled iron railings.

I’d love the opportunity to design another billiard room or other special purpose room that’s beautiful and enjoyable to entertain in. Buffets – A Homey Addition to Dining Areas

An attractive buffet not only lends functionality to a dining space, it can enhance or even change the appearance and ambiance of a room. I incorporate them often to add the right touch of homey and grounded energy to cozy living spaces.

In this open-concept, mountain-rustic home, I nestled a buffet between two wood support columns that separate the dining room from the rest of the living area. The buffet, along with the subtle steps leading into the dining space, distinguishes the area sufficiently to emulate a private retreat without detracting from the grandness of the home.

Any well-crafted buffet may serve as a visual anchor to a dining space, but this buffet takes the rustic style to new and beautiful heights. The attractive art across the front ties in with the painting placed directly above. The brilliant gold throughout connects with the warm glow of the lamp, the blooms on the table and other gold elements within the room.

The right style of a buffet can also be at home amidst contemporary styles. Here, we kept the lines simple and made sure the buffet blends with other decor elements. It provides unobtrusive function that won’t detract from the large contemporary painting or other works of art.

When buffets are not being used to display food, they provide a place to display decorative items. A stately buffet offers an ideal setting for displaying valuable china and attractive accent lamps.

Built-in buffets link the kitchen and dining areas, which is a practical and attractive way to add visual spaciousness to both rooms, in lieu of an open-concept design. Dishes can quickly be placed directly from the oven onto the buffet – a big time saver and space saver for parties and family gatherings.

Energize Living Rooms with a Home Bar

Why limit your living room to a fireplace and media center when you can amp up entertaining power even more with a full home bar? Great rooms and open floor plans that lend themselves to large living spaces offer perfect opportunities for incorporating functional and sophisticated home bars. These additions can be thoughtfully designed to seamlessly flow with the rest of the architecture and decor, while also enhancing the space with gorgeous finishes.

For a client who loves to entertain, me and my team designed this open kitchen and great room in a way that allows the kitchen island countertop to be a breakfast bar by day and a full cocktail bar by night. This multi-purpose design encourages gathering and socializing no matter how casual or formal the occasion.

I used clean lines, natural stone countertops and rich wood finishes to seamlessly connect this sleek and cozy bar area to the rest of the living room. Open shelving holding collections of art also extend around the bar to create cohesiveness, while adding color and interest to this space.

Whether you want a home bar for entertaining or a spacious library for studying, me and my design team can help you achieve luxurious living spaces tailored to your passions, hobbies and lifestyle. Contact Paula Berg Design Associates in Park City or Scottsdale online or by phone to learn how we can transform your home not only into a sanctuary, but also into a work of art.

Hanging Works of Art

Art can be so important to interior design that it should never be just an afterthought. When I introduce wall art to a space, I consider it carefully, including details such as how it should be positioned on the wall, the size of the work of art and how it affects the overall design.

This open space would be dull without the splashes of color this work of art provides. Blank, white walls provide the ideal backdrop for hanging art. Because each are detailed and colorful, I gave them a designated space on the wall to prevent overcrowding.

Large paintings like this one serve well as a primary art piece or focal point. The nearby sculptures don’t detract from the overwhelming sense of majesty — their similarity to persons portrayed in the painting only enhances it. One almost senses the sculptures are sentries, holding watchful vigil.

A mammoth stone mantel is the perfect backdrop for this immense painting, which contains enough southwestern flair to fit in with the room’s rustic style. Black chairs tie in with the black in the painting to bring design cohesion. We illuminated it to prevent the dark colors from fading into the stone background.

This painting enhances every element in the room above. The background is nearly the same color as the nearby walls, aiding the design flow rather than hindering it. The frame delineates the painting just enough without overpowering it, and nearby pottery underscores the art’s theme.

The style of this dining room is elegant, but also possesses a laid-back charm typical of most southwestern design. We chose art that injects comfortable charm, inviting guests to relax and take things easy for a while. Its colors connect with the decor, and we hung it low enough to be at eye level for everyone seated to see.

I love bringing out the beauty of a space with art. When you’re ready for an amazing change, contact Paula Berg Design Associates for all of your home design needs.

High Lighting Designs

“Design is defined by light and shade, and appropriate lighting is enormously important.” – Albert Hadley

The lighting phase of the interior design process is more than simply choosing the right fixtures. It’s an intricate undertaking that requires juggling and balancing several design elements to get it just right. Lighting fixtures, color palettes, natural light provided by windows and sky lights, and even the finishes throughout the space all have to work together to create the perfect combination of task and ambiance lighting. When lit right, spaces not only look fantastic but feel fantastic, too.

For this sleek city condo, I took advantage of natural light by opting for sheer window treatments and a soft neutral palette that I then anchored with a few dark accents.

Lighting in the bedroom can be tricky as clients are often particular about lighting as it relates to their sleep schedules. Since this city condo has space limitations, I knew that I had to keep it airy and light. White bedding helps to amplify natural light while the area rug and window treatments provide the perfect amount of color.

To achieve a truly luxurious spa-like master bath, I used a combination of fixtures and a strategic window treatment to achieve a therapeutic-like ambiance.

A ceiling dome fixture and track lighting supply the task lighting in this elegant urban kitchen while cabinet lighting and warm marble lower lighting to make the space inviting.

My design team and I achieved the layers of lighting in this sophisticated dining room using a stunning modern chandelier and contemporary lamps. Display lights illuminating pieces of art add the finishing touch.

This was one of my favorite spaces to really play with light. For this exquisite art deco foyer, my design team and I created a true masterpiece by harmonizing lighting effects with carefully selected finishes and artistic touches.
Here at Paula Berg Design Associates, my team and I are passionate about approaching every design with attention to detail in order to achieve luxurious interiors with high style, luxury, and comfort. Contact us today to learn more about our interior design services in Park City and Scottsdale.

Putting the ‘U’ in Custom

One of my favorite parts about creating custom home designs is personalizing living spaces to reflect my clients’ lifestyle, passions and hobbies. Whether I’m working with a fine art collector to design a chic Honolulu high-rise condo or an avid hunter and outdoorsman to design a beautiful backwoods mountain home, there is always a way to gracefully incorporate personality.

For this home design project, I had a custom media center designed to hold my client’s collection of sculptures. The custom art cases are even complete with display lights. As Vicente Wolf says, when it comes to incorporating art, “Good lighting is crucial.

Another custom media center I had designed for a home design project created the perfect platform to display my client’s colorful glass art collection. I love the energetic color accents it adds to the space.

For this client, I was challenged to come up with a design that incorporates a multitude of fine art from glass sculptures to large-scale paintings. The key was to create a design that focused on textures while a serene, neutral palette allowed the colors of the artwork to really shine.

Who ever thought a canoe could look so good? This decoration was no easy feat to install, but it was definitely worth the final results. The client loved the rugged touch it added to their rustic mountain home.

In another mountain home design, I enlisted the help of a lighting fixture artisan to craft these snowshoe sconces. They were the perfect touch to this rustic powder room with natural stone and wood vanity.

No matter what your design aesthetic, lifestyle and passions, my award-winning design team can help you to achieve a home custom designed to reflect what you love most. Contact Paula Berg Design Associates to schedule your design consultation today.

Lively Décor

Whether it’s majestic mountain views, sparkling shorelines or serene desert scenes, you can’t go long without being reminded of the phenomenal beauty and wonder of nature here in the Western half of the United States. Mother Nature inherently becomes the ultimate source of inspiration when it comes to design.

And what better way to complement interiors with organic forms, materials and colors inspired by nature than with Mother Nature herself? Whether with a single potted plant or a mosaic of foliage, I love adding life to interiors by incorporating plants into décor.

Paula Berg Design Associates

In this dining room, a modest-sized yet still distinct cactus on the sideboard table adds a welcomed pop of color. It also adds sculptural interest that bodes well amidst the other works of art.

An eye-catching cactus became the architectural centerpiece and focal point of this desert-inspired home my team and I custom designed for a client. I just love the dramatic scale and shape it adds to the space.

Paula Berg Design Associates

For this gorgeous great room, I strategically chose plants to incorporate throughout the entire space. The energetic bursts of green add vibrant life while breaking up and enlivening the rich colors and textures.

Now this flashy master bedroom design may not be for everyone, but I love how my design team and I enlisted the help of a stunning large-scale fern to add contrasting colors and lines not only with the plant itself but with the shadows it casts on the walls.

Once again, a combination of plants became the best way to create harmony in this space. The greenery adds contrast and interest while also beautifully balancing the visual weight of elaborate textures and elegant furnishings.

In honor of this occasion, I’d like to share some of my favorite rustic mountain interior design projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on.

One of the reasons I love rustic style interior design projects is because they give me the opportunity to work with unique materials and design concepts to achieve sophisticated spaces with an organic look and feel.

For this mountain home, I focused on creating a contemporary rustic space that would harmonize with the breathtaking mountain views, and I love the way it turned out. One of my favorite elements is the rugged coffee tables that create the perfect artful centerpiece against the stacked stone fireplace backdrop.

I designed this unique fireplace to double as a sophisticated and artistic accent wall that glorifies natural materials. I love its understated drama and the subtle elegance added through the symmetry and unique chandelier.

Inspiration Abounds Just Outside

I’ve traveled the world, but oftentimes I find the most inspiration right here in the Western region of the United States. One of the most wonderful parts of living and designing in the West is the infinite source of inspiration in the phenomenal beauty and wonders of the landscape.

And it goes beyond aesthetics. Interior designs inspired by their surroundings not only achieve stunning aesthetics but they create a feeling of harmony, inspiration and awe. Experiencing them is like a constant reminder of the beauty and bounty right outside our windows.

With thoughtful application and combination of lines, colors, forms and textures, interior spaces can become gorgeous reflections of the most breathtaking features and elements of nature. Even more, they become an experience. Just like a photo of a majestic mountain cannot compare to the feeling of looking out over a valley from a mountain vista, interiors inspired by their surroundings allow you to infuse your home with a look and feel that brings you joy and serenity.

The rich palette, patterns and materials I used to achieve this space were inspired by a desert scene.

I love how we were able to design this living room to become an extension of the shoreline.

Meet Paula Berg – Then & Now

Image

The creative process works in mysterious ways. What began as a career in communications, teaching and traveling has now evolved into an award-winning interior design business. But it was my passion for art and culture that has chartered my path to becoming a designer.

When I opened my first interior design boutique – Beyond Horizons – in Scottsdale, I was largely inspired by the Southwest style. The traditions, culture, and rich rustic aesthetic all spoke to me. I developed an expertise in purveying fine furnishings in the style as well as interior design advice on how to get the look. I eventually became the first design professional to earn the “Master of Southwest” accolade from Phoenix Home & Garden.

By the time I opened my own design firm – Paula Berg Design Associates – I already had a loyal customer base. But the more clients and perspectives I worked with, the more I was dipping into past experiences of traveling around the globe to draw inspiration from a wide range of traditions and aesthetics.

When Park City, Utah became the home of Paula Berg Design Associates, I was designing interiors in Tuscan, art deco, contemporary, mountain modern, contemporary Hawaiian and even Palladian, among other styles. The expansion of my design experience and knowledge into a wide range of design styles was driven by my ability to adapt to different needs and tastes as I aimed to create magical environments tailored to my clients.

My client-centric design philosophy encouraged me to work with natural and innovative combinations of materials. I was the first designer in the Southwest to incorporate stained concrete floors and etched metals, for example. Consultation regarding the selection of harmonious materials is now one of my specialties.
